Magnifica Trunk Show

When February 1 - 4, 2013
Where A.R.T., 249 Worth Avenue, Palm Beach, (561) 420-8866
Description Hirshon and his designer wife Etsuko will bring her one-of-a-kind jewelry treasure here.

There is an exclusive reception by invitation Thursday, Jan. 31, 5:30 – 7:30 pm. at A.R.T., 249 Worth Avenue.

Charles and Etsuko Hirshon are not your typical black pearl farmers from Tahiti.
Nearly 20 years ago, Hirshon met Etsuko Sasaki, Japan’s No. 1 black pearl buyer and the world’s preeminent pearl expert. She was then designing jewelry for Karl Lagerfeld.
The couple started an export company called Sasaki Hirshon, with her boutique “Magnifica” located below their corporate office in Papeete, Tahiti.
Charles Hirshon is half American, half Tahitian. His father, Lewis, a NYC businessman and investor, was traveling with Errol Flynn to Tasmania (to buy horses, of course). Flynn had to return to America to shoot a film. But Lew Hirshon wanted to see Tahiti. There he fell in love with a Tahitian beauty. The rest is history.
Charles Hirshon’s childhood home was the retreat where James Michener wrote “Tales of the South Pacific,” said Hirshon. “When the play ‘South Pacific’ opened in New York in 1949, my father was invited all the way to New York for the opening. When Michener talks about Bali Ha’i, he is actually seeing Moorea from the terrace of our house.”
Michener also penned memoirs of his days -- and nights -- with Lewis in his book, “Tales of the South Pacific: Rascals in Paradise.”
Today in the Hirshons’ mountain-top home outside the capitol city, there is a vintage photo of him, age 22, sitting in NYC’s El Morocco at “our banquette” with his pal George Hamilton. “We practically lived at El Morocco.”
Hirshon was living in Tahiti when he met Marlon Brando, then filming “Mutiny on the Bounty" in the 1960s. When Brando attended Hirshon's wedding, MGM had to stop filming for two days (at a cost of $100,000 a day - ouch). The two men remained friends for 40 years.
The Hirshons will be staying in Palm Beach with islanders Jim and Gaye Engel, their friends of 35 years. The Engels, along with Don and Coco Schefmeyer, also of Palm Beach, are the godparents to the Hirshons’ grandchildren, Marushka and Maximillian Hirshon, of New York City.

Born in St. Petersburg in 1982 into a family that was once nobility, she should have inherited extraordinary collections of Russian jewels and property. Instead, the Russian Revolution in 1917 and then the Siege of Russia from 1941 to 1943 changed her destiny.

“I know enough about the glory of my ancestors’ past to know that I wanted to honor my namesake and pay tribute to all they endured and lost; and the best way I can do this is through designing collections of jewelry which are a reminder to all of the splendor of the Russian Empire during this period and the magnificence of the jewels.”

Katya has designed an initial collection of jewels which were inspired by the past and which bears her name. The jewels will capture the magnificence of the Russian Empire considered to be the most extravagant, flamboyant and breathtaking the world has ever seen.
